    Summary

Remember to Think 111 First.  If you require the Minor Injury Unit or need advice on where to go, contact 111 before attending the Minor Injury Unit.

Neath Port Talbot Hospital (NPTH), Minor Injury Unit (MIU) offers a service for ‘walk-in’ patients over the age of one year, who have injured themselves within the last 4 weeks. It is important to understand NPTH MIU is NOT an Emergency Department (ED), and not equipped with the specialist staff, equipment & facilities to manage serious or life-threatening conditions.  By attending MIU when you require ED level care you may be significantly delaying your access to critical and lifesaving treatment. For an understanding of potentially serious conditions that need to be assessed in an ED please see below.

To help you decide where to attend and if MIU is the most appropriate service, it is important to consider the mechanism of injury (MOI). Simply the more force involved the more chance of a serious injury. Examples of significant MOI’s that should not attend the MIU but require assessment at an ED or a 999 call include:

    • Road traffic collision with significant damage to vehicle (undrivable), high speed collision, vehicle rolled over, or other passengers seriously injured

    • Motorcycle, bicycle, e-bike or e-scooter crash over 20mph

    • Falling down a flight of stairs or falling off a roof or high ladder (over 10 ft / 3m)

    • A pedestrian being hit by a car, motorcycle, bicycle, e-bike or e-scooter

    • Being trampled or crushed by large object e.g. Heavy machinery, horse, or cow

    • Burns involving an area greater than 3 times the size of the patient hand or involving face or groin areas

    • Any stabbing or penetrating type injury to head, neck chest, back, abdomen, pelvic area, thighs, or upper arms

    • NOTE: an ELDERLY or FRAIL person may sustain serious injuries just from falling from standing
