Summary
Occupational Therapist’s (OTs) work with children and young people who have difficulties with daily activities e.g. going to the park, scribbling and drawing, playing with toys, getting dressed, having a bath. These are called ‘occupations’. OTs help children and young people to carry out activities they need or want to do in areas of self-care, school work and play.
The aim of the service is to support children to learn new skills to help them become more independent. This is done together with the parent, child, teacher or other professionals the child may be known to.
How to access the service:
The way paediatric occupational therapy referrals are received in Swansea Bay University Health board is changing.
They are moving to open access. Parents/carers, teachers, additional learning needs coordinator, health visitors and other professionals can now request advice by calling: 01792 532140.
Parents, teachers, additional learning needs coordinator, health visitors and other professionals can call 01792 532140 to make a request. Professionals may encourage parents/carers to make the call.
Further relevant written information may be forwarded to the appropriate centre - Swansea or Neath. Their admin staff will record relevant patient details including name, date of birth, home address, school and any relevant diagnoses. They will also record caller details including contact details, relationship to patient and the main concern.
You will then be allocated a time slot on an agreed date, where an occupational therapist will contact you by telephone to discuss the main concerns. If we are unable to answer at that allocated time you will have to call again to book another slot.
Referrals for children/young people who require adaptations to their home must be directed to: urbanrenewals@swansea.gov.uk or 01792 635330.
