Out of Hours Pharmacy

For details of pharmacies open out of hours (after 5.30 pm Monday to Saturday and all day Sundays/Bank Holidays) click ‘Out of Hours Service’ under the ‘Filter by’ section and enter the postcode or town/city. Saturdays are classed as a normal working day, but please check opening times before travelling as some Pharmacies are only open for a few hours.

Some Pharmacies are commissioned to provide an Emergency Medicines Supply Service for patients who have run out of their medication free of charge (subject to conditions) when their GP Practice is closed e.g. on a bank holiday, on a weekend or in some areas, after 6.30pm Monday to Friday. The service is only for patients who have an immediate need and cannot wait until their GP Practice reopens and availability depends on which Health Board area you live in. Patients will need to show evidence to the Pharmacist that they have previously been prescribed the medication e.g. empty packet / container with name label.

Pharmacies not commissioned to provide the service free of charge can still provide an emergency supply but patients will be charged for this and refunded on receipt of a prescription for the medication supplied.

To find a Pharmacy offering the Emergency Medicines Supply Service, use our Pharmacy search facility. The out of hours filter will also show Pharmacies who offer ‘Emergency Medicine Supply Service’.

Please note that for patients who live in the Aneurin Bevan Health Board or Cardiff and Vale Health Board areas, this service is only available via the GP Out of Hours Service.

Palliative Care Emergency Medicines – Just In Case Box
Patients identified as needing palliative care support at home can agree to be prescribed a Just In Case Box. The box is prescribed by the GP and dispensed by a community pharmacy participating in the scheme. The box is not intended for immediate use, it is to be kept in the patient’s home until deterioration in symptom control necessitates its use i.e. the box is to be provided “Just In Case” it is needed.

Smoking Cessation level 3 Pharmacies
The service allows patients to access free NHS support and Nicotine Replacement therapy for up to 12 weeks to support patients to have a successful, quit attempt, without the need for a prescription.

NHS Flu Vaccines
If you are 18 and over and in an eligible group to receive your free NHS flu vaccine from the GP this year you may be able to visit a pharmacy to receive it.

Trained pharmacists will check that it is safe and appropriate for you to have a vaccination by asking you to fill in a questionnaire. Before travelling you should contact the pharmacy to ensure that you are in one of the groups who are able to have a flu jab (this may differ between pharmacies depending on the agreement they have with their local health board) and to ensure the pharmacist is able to offer you an appointment when you arrive.

Emergency Contraception
Use the “Provides Emergency Contraception (EC)” filter to find pharmacies who provide the emergency contraceptive pill. Some Pharmacies provide emergency contraception free of charge, please contact the Pharmacy directly before attending for more details.
