Overview
If you have lost a filling or crown (also known as a cap), see a dentist. If you have the crown, keep it safe and take it to the dentist.
If you don't have a dentist or can't get an emergency appointment, call your local Dental Helpline.
Don't go to your GP. They won't be able to give you dental treatment.
Whilst you are waiting to see a dentist:
- Keep your teeth as clean as you can by brushing them twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
- Cut down on sugary foods and drinks and try to keep these to meal times only
- Try to avoid biting hard foods with a tooth that has broken or lost a filling/crown
- Avoid very hot or cold foods or drinks that may cause sensitivity
If the tooth is sensitive, use a sensitive toothpaste. This can be most effective when applied directly to the tooth with your finger and left on the tooth.
What the dentist will do
The dentist will assess your tooth and advise you on the options for treatment.
They may suggest:
- At first, a temporary filling or repair
- Long-term you may need a new filling or crown
- If the tooth cannot be repaired, the tooth may need root canal treatment or to be extracted
